There are destinations that surprise. There are destinations that impress. And then there is Bavaria and the Dolomites in Autumn — a combination so rare, so visually overwhelming, so photographically generous, that those who experience it once rarely find the strength to resist returning.
Bavaria may not top the lists of Europe’s most fashionable photography destinations. And that is precisely what makes it so special. While everyone else looks in the same direction, we know where the real light is.
This is one of my own personal favourite destinations — a place that won me over completely and definitively, and that I have the privilege and genuine pleasure of sharing with you on this extraordinary tour.

Meeting Point — Munich International Airport
Our adventure begins in Munich — one of Europe’s most elegant and well-connected cities. The international airport is our gathering point, where the group assembles to begin one of the most complete and memorable photographic experiences of your life.
From the airport, we travel in a premium 4×4 SUV — spacious, comfortable and fully equipped for any Alpine condition — to our first base hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a journey of approximately one and a half hours that already offers Alpine views which hint magnificently at what lies ahead.
BAVARIA — The Best-Kept Secret in European Photography
Hopfensee — The Alpine Lake That Takes Your Breath Away
Our first photographic stop is Hopfensee — a lake of serene beauty and perfect natural composition, framed by the Bavarian Alpine peaks that rise majestically in the background. In Autumn, with morning mist floating above the water’s surface and the surrounding trees burning in shades of amber and gold, this place offers images of a painterly quality that recalls the great masters of German Romantic painting.
It is the ideal location to calibrate the eye, find the rhythm of the group and immerse ourselves fully in the extraordinary Bavarian Alpine light.
Partnachklamm — The Gorge That Astonishes
The following morning, we venture into Partnachklamm — one of the most dramatic and photographically captivating natural gorges in all of Bavaria. Waterfalls plunge with raw, untamed energy through rock formations sculpted over millennia, creating compositions of extraordinary visual power and intensity.
The combination of moving water, dark stone and the filtered light entering through the gorge walls is an exhilarating technical challenge — and the result, when everything aligns, is simply magnificent. Bring waterproof boots and prepare yourself for a photographic session that will test and reward every skill you possess.
Berchtesgaden — Where Ancient Magic Meets Alpine Grandeur
Berchtesgaden National Park is one of the best-kept secrets in Bavarian landscape photography — and one of the most quietly extraordinary places I have ever pointed a camera. Here, the Alpine world reveals a wilder, more ancient face, where the landscape carries a weight of myth and history that makes every composition feel significant. This is Bavaria at its most powerful, its most primal, its most deeply photogenic.
Hintersee — The Lake of the Druids
There are places that feel as though they exist outside of time. Hintersee is one of them.
Tucked into a narrow Alpine valley and surrounded by ancient, moss-covered boulders and primeval forest, this extraordinary lake carries an atmosphere so dense, so otherworldly, so quietly mysterious that it calls to mind the sacred groves of the ancient Druids. The gnarled roots of centuries-old trees grip the rocks at the water’s edge. The surface of the lake reflects the surrounding peaks with a mirror-like stillness on calm mornings. The forest breathes.
In Autumn, when the mist rises from the water and the golden light filters through the ancient trees, Hintersee becomes one of the most atmospheric and genuinely haunting photographic locations in all of Europe. This is not simply a beautiful lake — it is a place with a soul, and your camera will feel it.
St. Sebastian Church, Ramsau — A Vision of Alpine Perfection
If you have ever encountered the image of a small white church beside a rushing mountain stream, with the snow-capped peaks of the Berchtesgaden Alps rising behind it — you have already seen St. Sebastian in Ramsau. It is one of the most reproduced and most beloved landscape compositions in Germany, and standing before it in person, you understand with complete clarity why.
The church is exquisite in its simplicity — a perfectly proportioned white chapel beside the clear, turquoise waters of the Ramsauer Ache, with the dramatic Alpine backdrop completing a composition that requires almost no artistic intervention whatsoever. Nature has done the work. Your task is simply to be there at the right light, with the right lens, and to let the place speak.
In Autumn, with warm foliage framing the scene and the first snow on the peaks, St. Sebastian achieves a pictorial perfection that will produce some of the finest images of your entire photographic journey.
Königssee — The Royal Lake of Bavaria
The final jewel in the Berchtesgaden crown is Königssee — the deepest and cleanest lake in Germany, and one of the most dramatically situated bodies of water in all of Europe.
Enclosed on almost all sides by sheer cliff faces that plunge directly into the impossibly clear, dark green water, Königssee feels less like a lake and more like a fjord — a secret inland sea carved by glaciers and guarded by mountains. The famous St. Bartholomew’s Church, accessible only by boat, rises from the western shore like something from a Romantic painting. The acoustic echo that boat captains demonstrate mid-lake — a trumpet call answered by the surrounding cliffs — is one of those moments that reminds you why you travel.
Photographically, Königssee is in a category of its own. The scale is humbling, the reflections are extraordinary, and the quality of light that reaches the water between the enclosing peaks has a particular intensity and drama that rewards patience and precision in equal measure.
Crossing Austria — One of the World’s Most Scenic Routes
And then comes the moment that elevates this tour into something truly unique.
We depart towards the Dolomites, crossing Austria on a route that features, without exaggeration, among the most scenically breathtaking in the entire world. Approximately three hours of driving — but what hours they are. The Austrian Alpine landscape in Autumn is an uninterrupted succession of golden valleys, picture-postcard villages, snow-capped peaks and skies that appear hand-painted.

THE DOLOMITES — The Olympus of European Landscape Photography
Lake Dobbiaco — Arriving in Golden Light
Upon arriving at our Dolomites base hotel, after settling in and recovering our energy, we head to Lake Dobbiaco for the sunset session. And what a sunset it is.
With the Dolomite peaks blazing in shades of orange and deep crimson in the fading light — the phenomenon known as Enrosadira, unique to these mountains — and the lake reflecting the spectacle with an almost impossible perfection, this first session in the Dolomites will redefine your understanding of what landscape photography can be.
Lake Misurina — Perfect Reflection Among Giants
Lake Misurina is one of the great jewels of the Dolomites — an Alpine mirror of a beauty that silences words. Surrounded by the most dramatic and recognisable rock formations in the Dolomites, including the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo on the horizon, this lake offers reflections of a compositional perfection that any landscape photographer recognises immediately as something truly special.
In Autumn, with Alpine larch trees painting the shores in brilliant gold and early snow dusting the peaks — it is one of the most complete and visually rich compositions that Europe has to offer.
Lake Antorno — The Angle That Few Know
Neighbouring Misurina but far less frequented, Lake Antorno offers a different and equally powerful perspective on the Dolomites. With the Tre Cime rising on the horizon and the calm waters providing flawless reflections on windless mornings, this is the kind of location that experienced photographers treasure quietly — a less obvious composition, more personal, more distinctly your own.
Lake Braies — The Most Mythical of All
And then we arrive at Lake Braies — perhaps the most photographed and most beloved lake in all the Dolomites, and for reasons that are entirely and beautifully justified.
Its waters of an almost surreal emerald intensity, framed by pine forests and larch trees that in Autumn explode into extraordinary colour, with the vertical rock walls of the Dolomites rising dramatically all around — Lake Braies is one of the great photographic experiences of a lifetime. That is not hyperbole. It is simply the truth of those who have been there at dawn, watching the mist lift slowly from the water as the first light touches the peaks with golden fingers.
This is the moment that justifies the entire journey.
Alpe di Siusi — The Mountain as Enchantment
In the days that follow, we move to the breathtaking area of Alpe di Siusi — the largest high-altitude Alpine plateau in Europe, and one of the most photographically extraordinary mountain settings on the continent.
Here, the scale shifts entirely. The meadows open into vast panoramas, Tyrolean villages appear as points of warm colour in the golden-green expanse, and the Dolomite formations rise on the horizon with a monumentality that wide-angle lenses are simply made for.
Seceda — The Most Imposing Mountain in the Region
The culminating moment — in every sense of the word — of our time in Alpe di Siusi is Seceda.
If there is one place in the Dolomites that captures, in a single frame, all the grandeur, all the drama and all the singular beauty of these mountains, that place is Seceda. Its sharp rocky ridges, cutting against the sky with an almost architectural geometry, combined with the Alpine meadows below and the Autumnal light that bathes them during the golden hours — Seceda is the kind of place that stops the heart and starts the camera.
It is our focal point, our Alpine grand finale, the place where every technique developed throughout the tour converges in a single photographic session that you will carry with you always.
The Final Day — Sunrise, Breakfast & Return to Munich
Our last day begins as all the others have — before the sun. One final sunrise session in the Dolomites or on the Alpe di Siusi plateau, to capture the farewell light of this extraordinary landscape.
Then, a well-deserved and unhurried breakfast together, the moment to share favourite images from the tour, celebrate everything that was seen and made, and make the promises of return that one inevitably makes when leaving a place like this.
And then, the journey back to Munich, approximately 5 hours of Alpine road that, this time, you travel with memory full, memory card fuller still, and the absolute certainty that this has been one of the most enriching and creatively transformative experiences of your photographic life.
Why Autumn and Early Winter?
Bavaria and the Dolomites are magnificent in any season. In Autumn and early Winter, they are simply unbeatable.
The low, golden light extends for hours. The first snowfalls dust the peaks in white while the valleys still burn with colour. Morning mist creates an atmosphere of mystery and drama that Summer can never provide. The crowds have gone. The places breathe again. And your camera will work as it has never worked before.
This is Bavaria and the Dolomites as very few photographers ever see them — raw, luminous, unhurried and overwhelmingly beautiful.
This tour is not simply a photographic journey. It is an initiation into the language of Alpine light.

Moderate with some uphill hikes and longer walks so good footwear needed. Otherwise most locations and viewpoints are close to where we will be parked. There may be some walking on uneven terrain which could be wet and muddy, and some locations are hilly. Good sturdy, water resistant boots are advised.

The weather can be quite cold this time of year, and the mornings and evenings colder, so bring warm clothes. Ideally layers that you can remove or put on as we’ll be shooting before sunrise and after sunset, in the dark, when it will be colder. Bring wet weather gear and a raincover for your camera equipment.

This workshop returns you to Munich on October 14th. The Slovenia workshop begins just one day later — and if you book both together, there is no flight to arrange, no transfer to organise, no seam between the two experiences at all. The minibus continues. The accommodation is taken care of. You simply stay with the journey.
We travel from Munich to Slovenia together, with additional nights included in the combined package, so that the transition between these two extraordinary destinations becomes part of the adventure itself — passing through the Austrian Alps once more, watching the landscape soften and open as we cross into a country that rewards those who arrive with fresh eyes and a full memory card.
